Identity Beyond Illness: Reclaiming Your Professional Narrative
 @ Ms. Irons Sharpens

As I reflect on nearly 29 years of motherhood, I am reminded that parenthood is a journey riddled with unexpected bumps. Nine years ago, as I sent my son to college, a new chapter began when migraine took hold of my life. The struggles we faced were shared, and it was challenging to watch as Noah grappled with his own challenges, particularly the possibility of losing his mother and inheriting migraine.

This Mother's Day, my heart swells with pride and gratitude. Noah is now a man walking in his purpose, and I am reminded that our difficulties do not diminish our identities—they enrich them. Migraine taught me invaluable lessons, helping us both grow stronger and more tenacious.

This weeks blog, "Identity Beyond Illness: Reclaiming Your Personal and Professional Narrative" tells us that chronic illness should not overshadow the richness of our personal and professional stories. Are you a person living with migraine or do you treat someone with it? Consider how these experiences shape your narrative.

In your personal life:

- Acknowledge the role migraine plays without letting them overshadow who you are.

- Embrace the resilience and strength they've cultivated within you.

- Share your journey with honesty and courage, creating a community of understanding and support.

To reclaim your professional narrative:

- Highlight your achievements and capabilities.

- Use your personal strength and insights gained from battling migraine as a leadership advantage.

- Foster relationships built on professional value and shared experiences.

Research indicates that a chronic disease (CD) diagnosis can disrupt one's sense of self, prompting a critical reassessment of personal significance (Filej et al., 2018). This often leads to reconstructing one's identity to effectively cope with the challenges and adjustments that come with living with CD (Hoffman et al., 2013; Van Deurzen, 2014; Walder & Molineux, 2017). I can certainly relate to this because when migraine entered my life, it created chaos that compelled me to unlearn, re-learn, and renew my faith in God's purpose for me. In moments where the pain becomes overwhelming, I've realized that my true identity is rooted in God, allowing me to thrive despite the chronic condition. Through this journey with migraine I've developed problem-solving prowess, time management mastery, deep empathy, a profound understanding of myself, and remarkable adaptability. These aren't merely compensatory skills; they are leadership strengths that enrich my narrative.

Whether in your personal journey or professional ambitions, remember that you're multifaceted—Leader, Innovator, Problem-Solver, Change-Maker, Vision-Creator. Though chronic migraine is part of your story, it is not the headline. You have the power to write that, integrating both personal and professional facets into a narrative only you can craft.
